Life as an adult-ish.

It's been two weeks since I started my job. Two weeks! If life keeps going this fast, I'm going to be 30 in six hours. I blinked, and it was the end of my second week of work.

No. That's not an accurate description. I half blinked. My eyes aren't even re-opened.

Don't take this as complaining. I love my job! It's all about organization, scheduling, and general order. I love order. It just makes sense. There is the most amazing excel spreadsheet that I get to use to keep track of project statuses. It's a beautiful work of art. The color coding alone gave me goosebumps. And - AND - I get to use a label maker. I realize that these probably are not the most vital roles of my position, but it's the little things, guys.

This week was nuts because the gal who is training me was out sick all week. And the owner. And the construction coordinator. These are vital people. The odds were not in our favor. I spent an hour one day disinfecting the office to prevent this plague from taking down any more people. Anyway, the gal training me is not only the administrative assistant of the office, but also the project coordinator while the usual project coordinator is out on maternity leave. And I was the only one who knew anything about how she does what she does on a day to day basis. But it was only three days worth of knowledge. Needless to say, I did not have a comprehensive understanding of her duties (heh... duties...). So, there was much scrambling. I look forward to the day that I am fully trained. But I learned a lot throughout the week! Nothing like a full-immersion experience to fore me to self-teach. It's like going to a foreign country knowing only how to say "where is the restroom" in their language, equipped with twelve pages of an english-to-said-foreign-language dictionary, and leading a tour of fellow Americans throughout the country. Talk about a blind leading the blind scenario. But, like I said, I learned a ton.

In other news, Jacob and I are in training for the Dirty Half Marathon here in Bend that is going to be June 10th. We started our post-work runs on Tuesday, and let me just say that this is the main reason our week went so quickly. Jacob doesn't get off of work until 6, so we start running after he is off work, then go home, die on the floor for a little bit, make and eat dinner, get ready for the next day, argue about who is more sore (hint: it's him), and then it's bed time. Makes the days go by really fast. Which is a breath of fresh air after sitting at home all day alone for two months... yeesh. I thought I wasn't made for the working world, that I would simply love being a stay at home wife. Turns out that was not the case. Needless to say, I've reassessed how soon I want to become a stay at home mom. A couple more years sans kids does not sound so terrible. (Sorry world, you're going to have to wait a little while for that Skreen-Sherman genetic combination in the form of baby awesomeness that you've been eagerly awaiting. It's okay, just take a moment to compose yourselves after that blow.)

Jacob and I went on a little date last night, something that has become a habit every Friday for the last few weeks. Date night is a must! Date night is fun! Date night is not great for the diet! We went to 'This Means War' after getting Sonic earlier in the day (stressful, fast paced week = a hot fudge Sonic shake. And also, cheesy tots. Yes, I regret it immensely.) These date nights and other just-the-two-of-us adventures we will take are things that I am very much looking forward to. I mean, I've never been snowboarding. That's practically a cardinal sin in central Oregon.

In summation, integrating into the adult world is going smoothly.

P.s. The whole quitting sugar thing is going okay, but I had to relax a little because going so strict meant that sugar was all I thought about. Now that I've added in some fruit again, it's easier to stick to it. The last week was pretty smooth, not including our Sonic indulgence (and a cherry Icee at the theatre... whoops). Just being aware of how much sugar I eat in a day is huge, and I stick well under the daily 'recommended' value.

I got a job. Then I ran thirteen point one miles.

I realize I'm kind of late in announcing the whole job thing in a worthy manner.
{incidentally I don't consider changing my facebook 'about' section to be a good enough announcement of employment}
The story goes: last Thursday... no, let me back up: At the end of January, I started working at The Environmental Center. This was a really neat opportunity because they are a unique organization that promotes sustainable living within the community, and they are really good at and passionate about what they do. The day I got the job was the day before a networking/community/sustainability minded business meeting that TEC puts on every month, called 'Green Drinks'. I was invited to go, and accepted. I was a little out of my comfort zone, going to a place where I knew nobody in a city I had lived in for only three weeks, but I just had this 'feeling' that it would be a good opportunity to network and maybe get some job connections in my area of interest. This is where I met a gal who volunteered with TEC. She's around my age, has done a ton of work in the environmental field, and works for a solar power contracting company based here in Bend, by the name of Sunlight Solar Energy. During my time at TEC it came up that I was looking for full-time work, and she said she'd keep her ear to the ground for me.
Fast forward to last Wednesday, February 29th. I was feeling pretty discouraged about looking for work. Was I ever going to find something that would actually utilize my degree? Did I go to college for nothing? Was I going to sit at home alone all day for the next year while I hunted for a job? And PLEASE don't tell my that's my butt print permanently molded into the couch cushion where I spend hours searching for and applying to jobs! *cue emotional breakdown when Jacob got home*
Thursday, March 1st: The gal I met at Green Drinks called my supervisor, Sweet Pea (that is her real name, and it's very fitting, she is very sweet!), at TEC to ask if I was still looking for a job because Sunlight Solar was looking for a part time, temporary administrative assistant. Sweet Pea then emailed me to let me know of this opportunity, and right away I sent my info to the gal at Sunlight Solar because - HECK YES I was interested in working for a solar power contractor! The gal called me back that afternoon, and we set up an interview time for Friday morning (thought I had to ask for an earlier time because we were heading out of town at noon for Pullman). And it turned out they needed a PERMANENT administrative assistant because the current administrative assistant was leaving. Like, whoa.
Friday, March 2nd: Interview. Hired on the spot. Need I say more??
The whole weekend I kept forgetting that I was now gainfully employed. Like, for reals. The fact that I had a half marathon to run on Saturday morning, a baby shower Saturday afternoon, and a Pullman friends pow-wow Saturday night definitely helped to keep my mind occupied.
Pictures of the race didn't turn out too hot, and the pants I chose to wear are less than flattering, but I gotsta post some pics, yo.
{My running buddy and I before the race - we were talking about how
'un-impressive' 13.1 miles seems compared to 26.2. We did not think that at the end.}
{It was breezy and cold, that third day of March in eastern Washington}
{Still in good spirits amongst our 700 fellow runners}
{The energy was awesome as we started to move}
{So long! See you in 13.1 miles}
{The home stretch. I had my gloves and my headband stuck in the waistband of my pants.
It was a gutsy style move, but I took the risk}
{With 15-20mph head winds, the last 6 miles were brutal. My face sums it up pretty well}
{Since we weren't technically registered in the race I had to veer off the road before crossing the finish line mats
(lots of people ran without numbers because it filled up ridiculously fast, it being the first race of the season)}
{Oh, hi gloves and headband making me look oddly shaped. I squeezed out a smile because
I spotted Andrew taking video. Then I proceeded to complain about how I was dying for the next three hours}
The race went pretty well, my final time was 1:58. It is about 10 minutes slower than I expected, but that wind was brutal. For my first half marathon, I'm just glad I got in under the two hour mark. The aftermath was pretty painful. Running that much messes with your digestive system, so I wasn't able to eat without gagging for a few hours (among other thing that I won't put on the internet), and my joints and feet felt like someone hit them repeatedly with a baseball bat, but after a nap I was good to go. And then I signed up for the Dirty Half marathon in Bend the next day. The race is June 10th and I'm pretty excited!

After the weekend in Pullman, we got to come home to these cuties -

And then I started my job on Tuesday! Turns out they are super swamped right now so I get to work full time right off the bat. And in the future they hope to use my Environmental Science background for any environmental permitting they might need to do. One project needed an owl habitat survey done... OWL habitat. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I might get to do that sometime down the road!

All of this to say -- God's timing is impeccable. Jacob and I have been taken care of the entirety of our marriage, even when logistically we should have been broke as a joke. But every time things got tight, some blessing comes pouring in, whether it was Jacob's funding for grad school, my extra scholarships, good friends who had an extra room for a few months after our lease ended, Jacob's employment with the Engineering department after he finished his thesis, my two-week-turned-two-month job at the WSU sports science lab, Jacob's current job in Bend (!), my temporary job which led to connecting me to my temporary-turned-permanent-turned-full-time job... I can't even begin to comprehend how much we've been blessed, and how our timing is NEVER the same as God's timing. God's timing, His plan, His purpose... so much bigger and better than anything we can come up with. We are so very thankful, and take absolutely no credit.

Our first 'hike'

Last Friday we finally took advantage of one of the many outdoor activities that Bend has to offer - Pilot Butte. It was a gorgeous, sunny, 60˚ day and since Jacob's work schedule consists of four 9's and then a 4.5 hour day on Fridays, we had plenty of time for a quick hike! The only bummer was that the clouds were rolling over the Cascades so the mountains weren't in their full glory. Two months in, and every time I see the mountains out I have to let out a gasp. And sometimes we scream a little in the car about how awesome the view is. I cannot believe that we are blessed enough to live here!

What, my words aren't enough to paint a picture of this beautiful hike? I guess I can add a preposterous amount of few pictures.
{There were two paths, the road and the nature path. We chose? NATURE.}
{ :) }
{Looking out over north Bend. Those blue skies are visible over 300 days a year!}
{ :) }

{This is the SW view of the (cloudy) Cascades from the top of Pilot Butte}
{NW Cascades}

{Proof that I was there}
{Self portrait starts out normal. . .}
{The following progression speaks for itself}

{We caved and asked someone to take our picture}
{The descent}

We had a great day, drove back and forth across town about three times trying to hunt down a good sushi place, finally landed on Mio in Old Mill, ate some amazing sushi, got some fro-yo at All Mixed-Up for dessert (courtesy of my valentines day gift certificate! Got some N.S.A. tart fro-yo, which isn't too bad actually), and then went home and watched Contagion. It was a great Friday!

There are still so many things we want to do around here, from cross-country skiing to hiking Smith Rocks. Here's hoping we can find the time to cross some things off of our list!

P.S. I'm still searching for a job... no updates other than to say prayers are always appreciated. My temporary position finished with The Environmental Center last week, but I'll be filling in from time to time with them in the future as needed. But I'd really prefer to tell them 'no' next time they call due to having a job!

Quitting Sugar: Week 2

Week two went surprisingly better than I thought it would! It got off to a rough start with a family birthday extravaganza last weekend, with delicious sugary treats at my fingertips. And just being around people makes me want to eat sweet things. Snacking on some treats while chatting it up with the in-laws? It's only natural. And something I will definitely need to work on...

But the weekend was great - we got to celebrate Jacob's, his sister's and his brother's birthdays. Having everyone under the same roof was so nice! Even though we had to travel the farthest to get there, it was still half as far as from Pullman and we were giddy. Three-day weekend trips are so worth it now!

Here's a little glimpse into our fun weekend.

{Jacob's brother and his soon-to-be wife/my soon-to-be sister in law brought their
adorable pups}

{Lots of chatting}

{Kids play outside, rain or shine!}

{I helped to prep a few plates. Perspective: five kids x three meals a
day = I have a lot of respect for my sis-in-law!}

{Grilling up the most delicious Calbi (deliciously marinated short ribs), true Hawaiian style.
The kids called it "little steaks"}

{Presents! Why, yes. That picture is currently framed and displayed in our home.
I'm a proud aunt!}

{Uncles got great photo collages of their nieces and nephew!}

{The birthday crew plus my three oldest nieces}

{Some silly string happened}

{Nobody was spared. . . not even the baby}

{What is happening to me, mom??}

{The whole Sherman clan. Good looking bunch, no?}

{The Sherman 'kids' and significant others}

{This cake was what derailed my no-sugar plan. . .}

{Grandma snuggles!}

{My FAVORITE nephew was glued to me all afternoon. No complaints here!}

But after we were back home it was easy enough to settle back into my no-sugar commitment. Surprisingly easy. But a big help is that we no longer have sweet treats laying around to tempt me. Big shopping trip coming up means I get to stock up on great sugar-free natural sweeteners like coconut water and Stevia! Which makes me happy, because our stock of sugar-free-yet-still-appetizing foods is surprisingly lacking. And I'm also bringing home a nice stock of veggies so I can finally make use of our juicer. Yum!

Is that enough about sugar and food in genera? Yeah, I thought so, too. On to week three. . .
